Homepage: The Power of Sociology

My step mom and I have this habit of corresponding back and forth via letters and cards. She, being an English teacher, has always appreciated a thoughtful card far more than any bought gift. A while back, she wrote in one of her cards that she valued relationships above all else. I appreciated this sentiment, as it got me thinking about my own values and whether my actions are aligned with them. I also value relationships the most, my relationship with myself, with my family, and friends. We, as people, are incredibly social beings and I believe that we can find fulfillment from our relationships. Many religious individuals would probably cite their relationship with god as the source of their fulfillment. What could be more interesting than observing and studying how people interact?

Sociology is incredibly fascinating as it adds another level to the already complex insights that psychology offers us. Sociology seeks to discover why the individuals in a society act the way they do and delves into the immense complexities of a society. With a more accurate and full understanding of a society, we can begin to solve its problems. How can we start to solve a behavioral weakness like racism before we understand its origins, social structure and impact? Sociology requires an unbiased and critical perspective. The discoveries of sociologists can be utilized by political organizations to create better policies. Individuals with a sociological perspective are more likely to have positive interactions and insights. And through the comparison of different societies, we can look to learn from each other.
